Study of Green Roofs: Green Roof Guidelines, Water Quality and Peak Runoffs

Prof. Onyx Wai Wing-hong
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

To enhance the provision of greenery in congested urban areas, green roofs can be adopted as vegetated space.  Together with the primary concerns of Drainage Services Department on sewage treatment and flood protection, the project explored the feasibility of using green roofs as a means to mitigate stormwater runoff volume and improve runoff water quality.  Other objectives of the project included carrying out computer simulations and wind tunnel tests of wind suction forces on green roofs and establishing guidelines for green roof systems in Hong Kong.
