Integrating sciences and modern technology into enhancing human performance, the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences (RS)
of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has dedicated its efforts on acquiring and transferring knowledge in the areas of movement science and mobility,
neuroscience and brain functions, muscle physiology and sports, and Chinese therapeutics applicable to rehabilitation.
Its ultimate goal is to offer solutions to health-related issues and make positive impacts on people's life no matter they are with or without disabilities.
PolyU has been known to offer cutting-edge physiotherapy and occupational therapy educational programmes in the world. Faculty members in the Department cover the whole range of translational research in rehabilitation sciences. This includes using animal models to study impacts of therapeutics to augment injuries to the brain and bodily tissues, human models for understanding how the brain and muscle works, and efficacy studies on clinical services and devices for improving independence and quality of life of patients. A few of the examples tapping on outcomes of translational research are the patented "Wrist Fracture Splint" for applying bone physiology and Chinese medicine concept to enhancing recovery from Colle's fracture, "Bat Ears" for utilizing ultra-sound technology to assist people with blindness to navigate within the community, and "Sensory Cueing Wristwatch" built on the attention cognitive model to augment unilateral neglect of post-stroke patients. On sports training and rehabilitation, we are proud to witness the contributions of faculty members of the Physiotherapy Programme such as Drs. Simon Yeung, Ella Yeung and Amy Fu and their teams providing timely services to different Chinese National team in Beijing. All of them will enter the Olympic village in August 2008 in different capacity and contribute to the Beijing Olympic 2008. Last but not least, the Department operates a modeled Rehabilitation Clinic located at the PolyU campus. The Clinic offers quality services in rehabilitation, work injury management, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and sports training to both the PolyU and Hong Kong community. If you would like to know more about our expertise in rehabilitation sciences, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, please contact Miss Kit Chan at Tel: 3400-2713 or Prof. Chetwyn Chan, Head of Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at 2766-6727. |
